Clear Cut Glass: How do you know if you need your windshield repaired or replaced?

Jason Mariner, owner of Clear Cut Glass shares how to know if you need your windshield repaired or replaced?

If you have a chip or a crack in your windshield it can be hard to know whether you should repair or replace the windshield. For starters it is helpful to understand the difference between windshield repair and windshield replacement.

Windshield Repair

Windshield glass repair can only be performed on a windshield crack or chip that is very small. A windshield repair doesn’t require removing the windshield, can take 15 – 30 minutes, and costs about $50. Most auto insurance companies will cover the cost of the repair and can process the payment for you.

During the repair the technician vacuums the air out of the break and puts resin in the crack to seal it from moisture and debris. The windshield chip or crack becomes nearly invisible after the repair is complete.

Windshield Replacement

A windshield replacement involves the removal of the current windshield and the fitting of a new windshield. Sometimes the removal of the old windshield requires enough force to break the windshield.

Once the windshield is removed, the car frame is cleaned, and urethane is applied to the frame to bond the new windshield to the car. This process could possibly take anywhere from 45 min to 1 hour to complete and you will have to wait a few hours before driving your vehicle.

Either way, if you have a chip or a crack, do not wait to get it fixed. If you act quickly it can often times be repaired rather than replaced. Replacement may be your only option if the chip or crack grows larger than a dollar bill.
